She gave a single nod to Logan and then looked at Freddie. Keeping her voice soft, she said, “Freddie. I want to be honest with you so that nothing takes you by surprise. Logan is going to put a set of handcuffs on you.”

“No!”

Skye held her hands up. “I understand how you feel. I wouldn’t want to have to wear them either, but I want you to look around and see what you did to this room. I think you can understand why they’re concerned about you in the ambulance.”

Freddie blinked as he stared at the food and magazines and the footstool that had been hurled from one side of the room to the other. He didn’t say anything. He just looked down.

Skye continued. “Here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to call ahead to the hospital. I have a friend there. She’s really great. I think you’ll like her. Her name is Dr. Lorraine. I’m going to have her meet you right at the door. Can you remember that?”

Skye was trying to break the information down into the smallest bits possible. It wasn’t that she thought Freddie had some sort of developmental delay, but whatever psychosis had grabbed a hold of him was preventing him from processing larger pieces of information, not to mention reality. She had seen glimpses of complex thoughts, but they seemed to be clouded by whatever was misfiring in his brain.

Freddie didn’t answer. He just looked at the ground. Skye waved Logan forward. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Kevin slowly draw his taser. She licked her lower lip. She couldn’t blame Kevin. They were following police procedures. She just hoped they didn’t have to use it.
